India invades Formula1 now
The days of cricket and football in the nation are soon getting over. In 2008 Formula1 will emerge as the new big sport.

Vijay Mallaya had created a storm in Indian ranks by acquiring the Spyker formula1 team and rechristened it to Force India Formula1 team. This was to confirm the rise of motor sport in India.

Close to the announcement of this news another news follows that Spice Energy, the company that is nursing the A1 GP Team India is also set to join the ranks of Formula1 team owners. The company has been delighted by its success in A1 GP and wants to go a step ahead and acquire a Formula1 team.

Spice Energy has been having talks with many cash stripped Formula1 teams about the possible takeover. Super Aguri is one of such teams with which the company has confirmed that they are having talks with.

This news will definitely be a boost to Indian driver Narian Karthikeyan who has been driving for Spice Energy sponsored A1 GP Team India and has recently won the GP of China.

Harbhajan Singh cleared of racial charge
Tuesday, January 29, 2008
29 January 2008

Harbhajan Singh has been cleared of the racial charge by Justice John Hansen today. Harbhajan was instead charged with a Level 2.8 offence - abuse and insult not amounting to racism - to which he pleaded guilty and was fined 50 per cent of his match fees.

Australaian captain Ricky Ponting had made the complaint to match refree Mike Proctor on the third day of the Sydnet teat match that Harbhajan Singh had racially abused Andrew Symonds by saying words "Big Monkey". After the match finished the match refree Mike Proctor found Harbhajan Singh guilty of racicm under ICC rule no. 3.3 and was banned for 3 test matches. This charge was denied by the Indian team and they refused to play any cricket on tour after that untill Harbhajan Singh was cleared of this charge. later Indian board BCCI also got involved and said that they will pull out of tour unless the racicm charge was lifted from Harbhajan Singh.

To resolve the issue ICC first sacked umpire Steve Bucknor from the remaining series and also asked the Indian to file appeal into the charge which was held after the end of Adelaide test match today.

During the hearing, oral evidence was called for from all the witnesses to the exchange between Harbhajan and Andrew Symonds - Ricky Ponting, Michael Clarke, Matthew Hayden and Sachin Tendulkar. The witnesses were then cross-examined by Brian Ward, counsel representing the Australians, and VR Manohar, representing Harbhajan via video link from Mumbai.

"Justice Hansen said he was convinced that, on all the evidence submitted before him, the charge of a Level 3.3 offence was not proven but that Harbhajan should be charged with a Level 2.8 offence." Harbhajan pleaded guilty to this charge, after which the fine was imposed on him. Hansen is scheduled to provide the full reasons for delivering his judgement on Wednesday evening.

Manohar said that while the maximum punishment for a Level 2.8 offence was a fine of the full match fees and a ban of one Test or two ODIs, the fact that Harbhajan hadn't been booked under the ICC Code of Conduct since 1998 ensured that he got the milder penalty of a 50% fine of his match fees.

With the issue now resolved both the Australian and Indian Cricket Boards gave joint statement that they were happy from the outcome and are looking froward to good cricket in Commonwealth Bank Series also involving Sri Lanka.

Shane Bond Contract terminated by New Zealand
Monday, January 28, 2008
27 January 2008

New Zealand Cricket board has terminated the national contract of the fast bowler Shane Bond because of his contract with the Indian Cricket League (ICL), but the board has not ruled out allowing the fast bowler to return in the future. Bond, who has been involved in lengthy discussions over the deal, is now free to appear in the lucrative but unofficial Twenty20 tournament.

NZC considered Bond's request for a release in October but wanted him to fulfil his internationals obligations until his current agreement expired in May. An ICC decision last October prevented any contracted player from appearing in an unsanctioned event without the global body's consent.

"This is a difficult situation and we must comply with ICC regulations and support other Member Countries and as a consequence can no longer entertain Shane playing for New Zealand," Justin Vaughan, the NZC chief executive, said. "At some stage in the future we may be able to welcome Shane back in, either when he is no longer playing for the ICL, or when that competition does not exist."

Bond, who will reportedly be paid whether he is injured or not, will only be required for short stints with the ICL, which did not stand in the way of his international commitments. "I believed I could continue for the term of my contract while also taking up the ICL opportunity," Bond said. "Given what has happened, I want to do the right thing by NZC, so at their request I have terminated my contract."

He has played 17 Tests and 67 ODIs and hopes to add to his tally. "I will continue to be available to play for New Zealand," he said, "and look forward to doing so once again when NZC deems this appropriate."

Australia winds the series with draw at Adelaide
28 January 2008

Australia had already retained the Border-Gavaskar troply after the Sydney victory but the series was still alive because of the win by India in Perth. Going into day 5 of the Adelaide test match there was still a chance that had India not batted properly they would have lost the test match.

India began the day cautiously with Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag. Dravid was his usual self untill he was hit by a rising Lee delivery on his fingers. It was later learnt that he had fractured his fingers and retired hurt at that moment. Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag then took India past the 100 runs lead before Sachin got out trying to go for an impossible single. Sehwag on the other end was playing blazing innings and completed his first century in second innings of Test match cricket.

After lunch India lost Ganguly and Laxman but Sehwag remained solid and soon after tea he completed his 150 runs before edging a ball into hands of Gilchrist. The Indian tailenders ensured that there was no sudden collapse and the match ended in a draw. Sachin Tendulkar was declared the man of the match for his 153 runs in first innings.

Adelaide test will be most remembered for the retirement of Adam Gilchrist from the test cricket. He will still be playing the ODI cricket for 2 months before retiring from all forms of cricket.

Match fixing now in Tennis too
24 January 2008

The match fixing has again engulfed the Indian sporting public but this time around it is not cricket that is in question but infact it is the sport which is least likey to draw any attention of match fixers, the Tennis.

Indian tennis assosiation launched an inquiry on Tuesday to find whether any of their Davis Cup players since 1996 had been approached by illegal bookmakers to lose matches. The announcement came a day after doubles specialist Mahesh Bhupathi told Reuters he had spurned such an attempt.

"The All India Tennis Association (AITA) has taken a serious note of the revelation made by Mahesh Bhupathi in respect of Indian Davis Cup tie against Holland in February 1996," it said in a statement on Tuesday. "The AITA is very clear that Davis Cup is absolutely clean and no such incident has ever been heard of before or in the recent past in India.

Bhupathi has said he turned down an approach to lose a match in the World Group tie at home where India upset the Dutch with the 33-year-old playing a leading role. "I haven't been approach in the context of an ATP," Bhupathi said in the interview. "I was approached maybe 10, 12 years ago, in the context of Davis Cup in India,"

India put hefty total against Australia
25 January 2008

India began the day with probably the target of around 400 in their mind. Dhoni who was looking a shadow of himself yesterday played some free strokes before being caught at point boundary trying to uppercut a bowl from Mitchell Jhonson. His dismissal was soon follwed by a spell of short pitch bowling to Indian batsmen and it eventually paid off when Tendulkar top edged a hook shot to Brad Hogg at fine leg to give Lee his third wicket of the innings.

Tendulkars dismissal brought Harbhajan to the crease and the sight of 400 was looking distant for the Indian team with Australia going all out for the wickets. The first ball that Harbhajan faced he tried to play a slog shot. He was immediately spoken to by Indian captain Anil Kunble and was asked to apply himself. From then on both of them put on annoying 107 runs parternship with both of them going on to complete half centuries.

Even though Harbhajan was out after scoring his 50 the Australians did not helped themselves by dropping 3 chances to dismiss Ishant Sharma and allowing the last wicket stand to grow to 58 and India eventually finished the first innings at 526 runs with Anil Kumble being last man dismissed for well made 87 runs.

Australia were bolsted by the comeback of Matthew Hayden and it showed in their reply. The openors made a confident 62 runs for the opening stand and see the day through. India will try to get the 10 Australian wickets as quickly because batting on the Adelaide wicket gets difficult on days 4 and 5.

Yesterday top Industrialists and Bollywood stars rode the cricket bandwagon and made bids for the teams for the T20 championship to be played in a league based on Englands soccer league EPL and Americas NBA, called the Indian Premier League.

Shah Rukh Khan in partnership with Juhi Chawla won the bid for the Kolkata team while Preity Zinta in association with friend Nes Wadia of the Bombay Dyeing group picked up the franchisee right for the team from Mohali in Punjab. Flamboyant Vijay Mallya of the UB Group admitted that he wanted the Mumbai team, but he was outbid by Mukesh Ambani's Reliance. Sachins 39th Test century put India on top in Adelaide test match
Thursday, January 24, 2008
24 January 2008

In pursuit of win at the Adelaide test match the Indian management decided to drop out of form openor Wasim Jaffer and bring Harbhajan Singh in his place. This means that India would be going into the test match with 5 specialist bowlers and the batsmen will be under pressure to post big scores because they will be one batsmen short and Mahender Singh Dhoni has not looked in good form.

India won the toss and elected to bat first in the test match hoping to post big total in first innings and use the two spinners in last innings to force a result. Irfan Pathan opening for the first time on the trip got a good bowl from Mitchell Jhonson and he edged the bowl to Gilchrist. On the other end Sehwag looked solid and was scoring quickly to take pressure of scoring of Rahul Dravid. But Dravid failed to capitalaize on the good luck he had when he was given not out LBW by umpire Asad Rauf and was caught by Ponting off Jhonson again in the series.

After lunch India lost Sehwag quickly to a sharp delivery which he edged to first slip to be lapped up in safe hands of Mathew Hayden. After playing some crisp shots Saurav Ganguly was out LBW to Brad Hogg and India were in trouble at that stage. But Tendulkar and Laxman took India to tea without any damage and both players looked comfortable and not troubled at all.
After tea Tendulkar played some attacking cricket shots against the spinner Brad Hogg and took the attack to Australian bowling. Laxman was giving him good company from other end. Sachin reached his century in just 2 shots by hitting a six and off drive to go from 92 to 100 and complete his 39th century. India lost Laxman once again not playing shot against short ball of Bret Lee in similar way he got out in Melbourbne test match. Dhoni was giving Tendulkar company and they ended the day at 309/5 with Tendulkar batting on 124 and Dhoni not out on 6 from 54 deliveries.
India should be aiming to reach a score near 450 to be competitive in the match and with 5 bowlers look to exploit the conditions which they are familiar with.

Lalit Modi cautions Kiwi players about ICL
Tuesday, January 22, 2008
The battle between the Indian Cricket League and the BCCI is now being waged down under with a cricket board official cautioning the Kiwis from joining the 'unsustainable' rebel league.
"ICL is not sustainable and Kiwi cricketers shoudl not succumb to the lure of the rebel league," BCCI vice president Lalit Modi was quoted as saying by the Sydney Morning Herald.

A number of former and present Kiwi players have signed contracts with "better paying" ICL, triggering a crisis in the New Zealand Cricket.

Modil, who is also chairman of the BCCI-backed Indian Premier League, said: "To have a credible tournament one must not just look at the money but, more importantly, whether the competition is sanctioned, whether it's going to have the (necessary) infrastructure, whether it's going to be around for a while, and whether it's investing in the growth of the game or just profiting from it."

Modi also questioned the authenticity of the league.
"Does the ICL have enough safeguards to protect against match-fixing? Do they have the right officials such as match referees and umpires and do they have the appropriate rules involving anti-doping policies and playing guidelines?," he asked.

End of era coming close in Indian Cricket
Monday, January 21, 2008
The Indian team for the Common Wealth Bank series involving India, Australia and Sri Lanka was announced yesterday and notable absentees from the selection were Saurav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid. Rahul Dravid was overlooked by the selectors after the India lost ODI series to Australia at home and Rahul Dravid was failing to make any impression in that series and just concluded series against England in England. Saurav Ganguly on the other hand had a good run in the ODI cricket averaging 44 in shorter version of the game after his comeback into the side. Apart from that he also took crucial wickets in some of the games. Therefore it was a surprise not only for Saurav Ganguly but Indian cricket fans because the Virender Sehwag the guy replacing Saurav Ganguly has not been impressive in ODI cricket for a long time now.

With the selectors overlooking Suarav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid for ODI cricket with 2011 World Cup in mind it is quite evident that the dawn of the Big Three of Indian cricket Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Saurav Ganguly is coming to an end. The selectors have made it clear that although Sachin Tendulkar is in the side but he will be featuring in at most 5 out of 8 league games involving India.

With all the three players in their mid 30s and not as flexible in the field and running between the wickets it was quite obvious that they will be making way for the younger lot. The T20 victory has had a huge impact on the selectors thinking about young players. Guys like Suresh Raina, Manoj Tiwari and Piyush Chawla are touted to be the future of the Indian cricket and it is good opportunity to get them into the team before the next edition of the World Cup when it is quite clear that none of the Big Three will make it to the World Cup. Therefore, although many people will criticise the decision of the selectors but it a right step forward.

In Test match cricket though, the three will still be handling the bulk of Indian batting along with VVS Laxman for at least 2 years. Since all of them are of similar ages it will be wise to start preparing young Indian batsmen for the Test cricket otherwise we could have a situation in future where all the four retiring at same time and not enough quality players to replace them. Therefore, it is imperative that the team management and selectors start looking forward in terms of Test match cricket as well.

The bowling department is looking very good right now with a lot of young bowlers coming in and the leader of the bowling attack Zaheer Khan is also young. Sreesanth, Ishant Sharma, Irfan Pathan, RP Singh are the guys we can bank on performing for next decade as all of them are young and aggressive in the approach.

The Indian squad for the Commonwealth Bank Series to be held in Australia next month invloving India, Australia and Sri Lanka was announced today afternoon. Gautam Gambhir who has scored centuries in last two Ranji trophy matches alsi makes a comebak into the side after being sidelined for test series due to shoulder injury.

The bowling will be spearheaded by RP Singh, Sreesanth and Irfan Pathan. The rookie bowler Ishant Sharma has retained his place from Test team due to injury to Zaheer Khan and some good showing by him during the Perth Test match.

Delhi wins Ranji Trophy
Saturday, January 19, 2008
19 January 2008

Delhi scripted a remarkable comeback to win the Ranji trophy final match. Having conceding lead to UP in the first innings the Delhi youngster Pradeep Sangwan grabbed quick wickets today in morning to dismiss UP to 177 all out in there second innings when at one stage they were cruising at 112-2 in second innings and Suresh Raina going strong. Delhi grabbed quick wickets late in evening to stall the UP charge and today in morning they dismissed Up and just allowed 23 rus to be added.

The UP needed another miraculous performance from there seamer Praveen Kumar to have any chance of containing the Delhi team but he did not got any support from other end and in second innings the Delhi openors Gambhir and Aakash Chopra insured that they did not loose wickets to new ball.

Gautam Gambhir placed another gem of innings to score a century in the final of Ranji trophy match to go along with his century in the semi final match. Ishant Sharmas hour of glory
19 January 2008

Ishant Sharma produced the spell of his life at Perth here today against the best batsmen in the world at the moment. There have hardly been times in last 5 years that Ponting has been troubled by any bowler. Occasional spells by Harbhajan Singh and some burst by Andrew Flintoff in Ashes series in England have troubled him from time to time but the Australian captian has been having field day against most attacks around the world.

Today at Perth in the morning session Ishant kept coming hard at the Australian and had him in all sort of problems. The youngster troubled Ponting in his 8 overs spell and never faded away. Just when Ricky Ponting thaught that he had weathered the storm of Ishant spell after 7 overs by the ypungster, he was given one more over at the behest of his Dlehi captain Virender Sehwag and the move eventually resulted in wicket of Ponting.

It was a just reward for thr the youngster who is only 19 years of age and has been getting better and better with each outing. Not only did he showed great fitness to bowl a long spell, he was bowling it at a fair speed and even touched 142ks in the spell. No matter what happens to the youngtsre in future he will definately be remembered for this spell in ages.

India create history at Perth
19 January 2008

India created history today by beating Australia at Perth. Not only did India stop Australia who were on the verge of 17th consecutive test match victory but also became the first team from sub continent to beat Australia at Perth.

India started day in search of 8 Australian wickets and young Ishant Sharma bowled a brilliant spell to Australian captain Ricky Ponting. He had Ponting in all sort of troubles and had some close LBW shouts against him. After bowling 8 overs on trot he was given 1 more over on insistance of Sehwag by Kumble and he removed Ponting with a ball that left him slightly and batsmen giving simple slip catch to Rahul Dravid.

Having just lost 1 wicket before lunch Australia might have expected to start the chase as they scored some brisk boundaries after lunch. But soon Micheal Hussey who was solid as a rock at other end since morning and Andrew Symonds the hero of Sydney test match were dismissed in quick succession due to umpiring errors. It was now the turn of Australia to be on receiving end of umpiring decisions.

Sehwag then chipped in twin wickets of Gichrist and Bret Lee to leave Australia 7 down at tea. After tea Clarke was dismissed quickly for well made 81 and it only left 2 wickets to get for a famous win. But Mitchell Jhonson andStuart Clark had other ideas. The pair took liking to Indian bowling and dismissed them as if they were playing against the school kids.

The new ball was taken soon as it was due and it immediately provided results as the bowlers picked up remaining two wickets to wrap up a memorable win in the Indian test cricket.

Kumble reaches 600 milestone
Friday, January 18, 2008
17 January 2008

Anil Kumble has become the third bowler in history of the game to claim 600 or more test match wickets. Kumble achieved the feat when Andrew Symonds was caught at slips after deflection of Dhoni gloves balloned the ball for a simple catch. Umpire Asad Rauf looked like giving the batsmen the opportunity to walk and when he did not moved raised his finger and Indian camp jumped in joy. The wicket was also special from the fact that it came at crucial stage when Australia were seen getting back into the game after being 5 wickets down for 62 runs.
Adam Gilchrist who was at the non striker end congratulated Kumble and Kumble in reply said that he wanted Gilchrist to be his 600th victim rather than Symonds. Gilchrist has been supporter of Kumble and also called up to congratulate Kumble when he had taken 500 test match wickets.
This is a great achievement for a bowler who was never given the same recognition as his other counterparts when he had the same pedigree as the other two spinners who are above 700 test wickets mark. It is also remarkable that Kumble has matured into a very good test match bowler when everyone thaught his career was over after the shoulder injury and string of poor performances in 2003 the same time when Harbhajan SIngh was bowling at his peak.
"Jumbo" as he is called by his teammates is enjoying his best days in cricket as he recently became the captain of Indian Test side and also was the only batsmen to score a century on the tour of England in which India won the Test series after 26 years.

Yuvraj hurt his knee this morning before the start of second day's play of the third Test against Australia and it is still not certain how serious is the injury, according to media manager MV Sridhar.

Australia fight back to take control of Perth test match
Wednesday, January 16, 2008
16 January 2007

Indian Captain won the toss and had no hesitation of batting first on the WACA track which by all reports had the pace and bounce to trouble the Indian batsmen. Virender Sehwag who was brought in side in place of Yuvraj Singh started Indian batting charge on Perth wicket with a breezy 29 runs. In process he was responsible for Indias best opening stand of the series with his partner Wasim Jaffer. Sehwag was out cutting a rising delivery of Jhonson and giving simple catch to Adam Gilchrist. Wasim Jaffer soon followed Sehwag with edging the ball outside off stump.
At this moment India had a bit of luck when Dravid was put down at first slip by Micheal Clarke and then Dravid and Tendulkar put on century partnership to get India to safety and strong position going into tea. After tea India lost Tendulkar early to a dubious LBW decision by umpire Asad Rauf and then Ganguly was caught brilliantly in gully by Hussey.
With team in trouble Dravid and Laxman looked to taking India to strong close for the day when Dravid played uncharacteristic shot to get out at score of 92 and giving Andrew Symmonds another wicket for the series when Ponting was looking for quick overs to make for the over rate which was poor due to 4 fast bowlers bowling throughout the day. Dravid dismissal was soon followed by dismissal of Laxman and in the end India finished the day 297-6 from 94 overs with Dhoni and Pathan on crease.
Australia will like to quickly grab the remaining wickets tomorrow and try and bat India out of the game while India on the other hand will be trying to get past score of 350 and then restrict Austrlaia on what will be the best batting conditions in the test match.

Gentlemans aggrement off
15 January 2008

The gentleman agreement between the Indian Captain Anil Kumble and Australian Captain Ricky Pointing was put to rest following the meeting between the two captains on Monday. The agreement led to a lot of bad blood between the sides before it has been scrapped. Both the captains had agreed before the start of series to go by the fielders word in case of unclear catches and collections.
"That wasn't the way I wanted to play. But the feeling through the Indian team was that they would like it to go back and be in the hands of the umpires on the field." Ricky Ponting said. Kumble was initially reluctant to accept that the agreement wouldn't come into play but admitted it once he was told that Ponting had already revealed it to media before him. "yes, certain things are best left to the impires, third umpire and the match referee. As it is, the players and umpires are all under pressure out in the middle, there is no need to burden ourselves with more. I think things will be best handled with the match referee or the umpires deciding on them." said Kumble.

Gavaskar in eye of 'racist' storm
15 January 2008

Indias batting legend Sunil Gavaskar has been facing the heat from his former opponents on field regarding the racism controversy of his own. Former South African batsmen Barry Richards has alleged that the former Indian skipper once tried to have him sacked as a television commentator for being a racist. "He wrote a letter to Supersport demanding that I be sacked because I was a racist" Barry Richards told The Australian.
Former New Zealand captain Jhon Reid, who was also incensed by comments of gavaskar in his newspaper column, said that Gavaskar should have kept quite Harbhajan issue as he too works for ICC.
Meanwhile Sunil Gavaskar rubbished growing critism over the controversial newspaper column, saying he never called match referee Mike Procter a racist. In his column Gavaskar had written "Millions of Indians want to know if it was a 'white man' taking the 'white mans' word against that of a 'brown man'".

Sony and World Sports Group bag IPL television rights
Tuesday, January 15, 2008
14 January 2008

In one of the biggest telecast deals in World cricket, the Sony Television network and the Singapore-based World Sports Group (WSG) has secured the rights of the Indian Premier League (IPL), the officially-sanctioned Twenty20 league, for ten years at a cost of more than US$1 billion. As part of the deal, Sony will pay the BCCI US$908 million for the telecast rights and US$108 million for the promotion of the tournament. WSG will explore the international market while Sony will cater to the subcontinent market.

"We have what we believe to be the best deal for the Indian Premier League and Indian cricket fans" Lalit Modi the BCCI vice President and IPL Chairman and Commisioner announced.

The IPL has a pool of at least 78 cricketers with international experience from which the franchises can sign on players. Shane Warne will be the most expensive player, costing US$400,000 for a franchise to employ him. The next highest fee is for Glenn McGrath and Stephen Fleming, of US$350,000. Apart from the international stars the main attraction will be the Indian superstars Sachin Tendulkar and 20-20 champion cricketer Yuvraj Singh.

The bids for the franchises, the base price of which is US$50 million, will be opened on January 24 while player auctions would follow around February 7.

Film actor Shah Rukh Khan and Indian batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar were also linked with having shown intrest in buying franchises but the same has been ruled out by IPL. Other notable names intrested in franchise include Reliance and Beer King Vijay Mallya.

Changes likely on both sides for Perth Test match
15 January 2008

Chris Rogers is all set to make his Test debut for Australia in the upcoming Pert Test match starting on Wednesday. Australian side confirmed yesterday that in form opening batsmen Mathew Hayden has not fully recovered from the hamstring inhury he suffered during the second innings of Sydnet test match.

Chris Roger who was also the part of ACT XI and made 60 and 17 in that match could not have asked more than the perfect setting for his debut match as it will be played in his hometown of Perth. Hayden's leg injury, which ended his 86-Test streak, meant Rogers, who is 30, had to wait only another two months for an opportunity and he will walk out with Jaques, his former Australia A partner, in the third Test.

Australia are also set to bring in fast bowler Shaun Tait in place of Brad Hogg who has failed to impress in the first two test matches and failed to pick even single wicket on the final day of the Sydney test match.

On the Indian side out of form Yuvraj Singh is likely to make way for Virender Sehwag. The soon to be Indian coach Gary Kirsten insisted on specialist positions and is likely to play key role in the selection of Pert test match where Sehwag will open with Jaffer and Dravid will take his number 3 position back. Another big question ahead of this match for the Indians is wheather to play Harbhajan Singh or Irfan Pathan. So far the Indian team management has went for Harbhajan but with Perth wicket more likely to assist pace bowlers it is highly unlikely that they will go for Harbhajan in this test match.

Sania wins opening round match
15 January 2008

Sania Mirza sailed past Uzbekistan's Iroda Tulyaganova in straight sets to advance to the second round of the Australian Open in Melbourne on Tuesday.
The 31st-seeded Indian beat Tulyaganova 6-4, 6-2 and will now take on the winner of the match between Australian Sophie Ferguson and Swiss Timea Bacsinszky.
The 21-year-old, who has been battling injuries and off-court controversies, was rusty to start with as she wasted a couple of break points and committed 11 unforced errors in the opener.
But Tulyaganova's patchy form worked to Sania's advantage and the Indian wrested the first set after a 40-minute see-saw battle.
Sania then showed some fine form in the second set, cutting down on her unforced errors besides breaking Tulyaganova twice.
Sania also did well to hold her serve and did not give away a single break point, outplaying Tulyaganova in just 29 minutes to advance to the second round of the season's first Grand Slam.
If she gets past the second-round hurdle, Sania, who is placed in the third quarter of the draw, will have to brace up for a possible showdown with eighth seed American Venus Williams.

Charges against Hogg dropped by India
14 January 2008

Sending out a message of goodwill, India on Monday dropped the charge of abusive language by Australian spinner Brad Hogg, saying it is time to move on with cricket.
The Indian team management decided to withdraw all charges against Hogg at the hearing with Match Referee Mike Procter, a development that could have a bearing on the racial abuse case involving Indian off- spinner.
Skipper Anil Kumble, who had a reconciliation meeting with rival captain Ricky Ponting during the day, told reporters that the Indians decided to drop the charge.
"It was just something that happened in the heat of the moment. Cricket is larger than individual and its time to move on," Kumble said.
Match Referee Procter described India's move as a "magnificent gesture" while Hogg was also prompt to thank the Indians for letting him off the hook and said that Indias stand was "highly appreciated" by the Australian team.
It is learnt that the decision to drop the charges against Hogg was taken at the behest of Kumble in consultation with BCCI officials.
Hogg was charged under Level 3 of the International Cricket Council's Code of Conduct following allegations that he verbally abused Anil Kumble and Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Hogg is accused of making the remarks during the final day of the controversial second Test in Sydney.

Clarke clears the air with Kumble
Monday, January 14, 2008
13 January 2008

Michael Clarke says he has cleared the air with Anil Kumble over two of the controversies that flared in the second innings of the Sydney Test. Clarke stood his ground after edging Kumble to first slip and then, as India were fighting to save the game, he claimed a catch off Sourav Ganguly while fielding in the slip cordon, although there were doubts over whether the take was clean.
"I wanted to speak to Anil before I spoke to the media on both cases - the catch and my dismissal," Clarke said. "I still, to this day, feel 100% positive that I caught the catch fairly. I told him that and said with my dismissal that it was more out of shock and disappointment more than anything else.
"Anil was very supportive and said 'mate I understand'. We've played a fair bit of cricket against each other and he knows I'm not the kind of person to try and harm the game; the last thing I'd want is to put the game in jeopardy."
Kumble had criticised Clarke for not walking after edging to slip and called it "unsportsmanlike" behaviour.
"I was really excited to get out there and do well, with family and friends all at the game, after failing in the first innings. When I went to cut the ball and it come off my glove and went to slip it was more just the shock and disappointment of failing and getting my first first-baller in Test cricket. " Clarke said.

No question of pullout from Australia tour even if Harbhajan appeal fails - BCCI
Sunday, January 13, 2008
12 January 2008

India will not pull out of its tour of Australia, even if an appeal against spinner Harbhajan Singh's ban for alleged racist comments is rejected, media reports quoted India's cricket chief as saying Saturday.
The future of the tour had been in doubt after Singh was suspended for three tests for racially abusing Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds during the second test — he allegedly called Symonds a monkey.
"There's no question of a pullout," Sharad Pawar, who heads the Board of Control for Cricket in India, told the Hindustan Times newspaper.
The BCCI allowed the team to continue with the tour following the granting of an appeal of Harbhajan's suspension, and the removal of umpire Steve Bucknor for the upcoming third test in Perth.
But speculation remained that India might halt the tour if Singh's hearing upholds the ban.
"The series will not be affected," Pawar told the paper. "We are focussed on fighting Harbhajan's case, but it all should be within the game."
Singh is free to play in Perth pending an appeal. A date for the appeal hearing has not been announced by the ICC.

The skipper for a storm - Peter Roebuck
12 January 2008

Simon Katich is the man to captain the Australian team in the event of any further calamities befalling the national side.
It is not that they need to placate a single cranky reporter. They need to reassure the Australian public that they mean to represent the country not only with skill and dedication, but also with grace. It has been missing. It is not so long ago that a distinguished politician was unceremoniously pushed off a podium.
Katich is a capable cricketer in superb form and a respected leader with a strong outlook. He has captained teams at every level and recently has led New South Wales and Derbyshire with distinction. Last week one of his county players spoke highly of him as a batsman and leader, praising his straightforward and intelligent approach to the game. Anyone watching the Blues this season will confirm that the team has been playing with renewed spirit and greater imagination than previously.
Brett Lee could be his right-hand man. Lee has enacted in his own career precisely the sort of transformation Australian supporters seem to seek from their national representatives. Attention was drawn in his younger days to an action that became ragged whenever he went wide of the crease. Harsh words were written about beamers sent down at disturbing moments. He might have sulked or sued. Instead, he confronted any weak points and has emerged not merely as a great bowler but also as an impressive man. Lee is not merely an outstanding figure in the Australian team. He is respected everywhere. It is a worthy enough aim for every teammate.

Sehwag, Kaarthick shine on final day - Hindustan Times
Saturday, January 12, 2008
12 January 2008

Explosive opener Virender Sehwag made a strong case for a Test recall with a typically swashbuckling century on the final day of India's three-day tour match against an Australian Capital Territory XI in Canberra on Saturday.
And the man Sehwag is likely to replace in the third Test at the WACA Ground, Yuvraj Singh, again failed to reach double figures as his form woes mounted.
The match ended in a draw, India declaring its second innings at tea at 281 for four, an overall lead of 314, with the ACT 60 for 3 in reply when both teams agreed to an early stumps.
After making a scratchy 24 in the first innings, Sehwag capitalised on a flat pitch and modest attack to reach his hundred in well under a session, facing just 73 balls in the process.
Sehwag, who was considered close to a recall for the controversial second Test in Sydney but hasn't played at the top level for over a year, made his intentions clear when he opened the day by belting three boundaries from the first over.
He continued in that vein before being caught behind just minutes before lunch for 113, ending a frenetic 158-run opening partnership with Dinesh Karthik, who narrowly missed a century.
Sehwag hit 18 fours and two sixes and faced only 78 balls to finally give the Indians something to smile about at the end of a testing week on and off the field.
"It was good I spent quite some time in the middle," Sehwag said. "I just focused on being positive and wanted to perform well. I feel I am in good touch and timing the ball very well.
"I have got my rhythm back. I have got everything back," he added. "I think the Perth wicket is good for me and good for batsmen because the ball comes on (with) pace and bounce so you can play your shots."
The 29-year-old brought up his century by flicking a ball to the fine leg boundary, and then celebrated by smashing a four and six from the final two deliveries of the over.
Sehwag has played 52 Tests, with 12 centuries and an average of 49.46.
The entertaining knock dramatically increased the pressure on Yuvraj, who later in the day failed again.
He made just three after scoring only two in the first innings, and his spot in the side for the third Test, starting Wednesday, must be in grave doubt.
Yuvraj has not only struggled with the bat, making just 17 runs at 4.25 in the first two Tests and offering some soft dismissals, he has been disappointing in the field and his attitude has been criticised.
Opener Wasim Jaffer, also under pressure, fell cheaply for 21, but made 92 in the first innings.
Karthik, dropped on 19, also put a case for Test selection by making a polished 97 from 152 balls, including 12 boundaries.
The ACT declared its first innings at the overnight score of 292 for eight, young paceman Ishant Sharma the pick of the Indian bowlers on the second day with 26 for three.
In the ACT's second innings, West Australian Test hopeful Chris Rogers missed another chance to impress when he made just 17, caught behind from the bowling of Irfan Pathan.

Sania upset over flag controversy: Bhupathi
11 January 2008

Sania Mirza is "upset" over accusations that she disrespected the National Flag and is giving a serious thought to whether she should continue with her tennis career as she frequently finds herself entangled in some or the other controversy.
"She is very upset. It is a major issue for her. At the end of the day, she is a 21-year-old girl trying to do her best by everyone," Mahesh Bhupathi, India's doubles ace and her manager, was quoted as saying by 'The Australian'.
"Everything is adding up and she is starting to wonder whether it is all worth it, but people close to her, they are telling her to hang in there," India's doubles ace said.
mooter_page_section="AdUnit2";

Sania was recently embroiled in a controversy over the shooting of a commercial in the premises of the Mecca Masjid in Hyderabad and tendered an apology in the matter.
Close on its heels comes the legal case filed against her by a Bhopal resident for allegedly showing disrespect to the Tricolour.
Images of Sania putting her feet towards the flag while watching Rohan Bopanna's match at Hopman Cup in Perth were flashed all over newspapers and television channels.
If found guilty under the Prevention of Insult to the National Honour Act, Sania could face a three-year term in jail. Bhupathi said these issues were disturbing the tennis star.
"It is affecting her form. It is affecting her mentally. Not many people would know this, but I, as her manager, know that she turned down a six-figure sum from another event to play for her country in Perth.
"People don't know what goes on behind the scenes, yet they make these irresponsible and ignorant accusations. You don't turn down big money to play in another event if you don't love your country," Bhupathi said.
All India Tennis Association has also come out in Sania's support saying too much is being made of trivial issues and she should be kept away from controversies to allow her to play freely.
"It is most unfortunate that Sania Mirza's name is being dragged unnecessarily from one controversy to the other. Such situations are affecting her performance," AITA Secretary General Anil Khanna said.

Gambhir sizzless as Delhi reach Ranji final
Friday, January 11, 2008
8 January 2008

India could be facing a dilemma over openers in the ongoing tour of Australia, but Delhi—thanks to the Indian selectors’ decision in resting Gautam Gambhir—have had no such problems.
On the contrary, the left-handed opening batsman—in smashing form this season following his Twenty20 pursuits—has been among the top performers in the Ranji Trophy.
Having already notched up two hundreds in three matches so far, he came up with his third on the fourth day of the Super League semi-final against Baroda today.
An entertaining 132, laced with 23 boundaries, at a strike rate of 74, eventually helped Delhi book their berth in the final, against Uttar Pradesh, with a resounding seven-wicket victory.
Incidentally, the opener finds himself out of the national team after the selectors had announced—prior to the tour of Australia—that he was suffering from a sore shoulder.
With regular opening partner Aakash Chopra rested on Day four, after being admitted to the hospital following complaints of giddiness and nausea, Gambhir opened the innings with Shikhar Dhawan.
He took the attack to the opposition with unrestricted strokeplay as Dhawan (49) kept company at the other end. A crucial 136-run opening stand helped Delhi eye the 271-run chase with ease.
With Gambhir attacking Baroda’s spinners, Dhawan ensured he kept the strike rotating. Gambhir completed his hundred by hitting boundaries on both sides of the wicket.
Gambhir was particularly severe with left-arm spinner Rajesh Pawar and off-spinner Yusuf Pathan, in trying to get better with his strike rate.
After hitting three consecutive boundaries off Pathan in his 15th over, Gambhir was caught at short mid-wicket while attempting a fourth one. Lucky to get away, he later gave his side just the start that later enabled No 3 and 4 batsmen prosper further.
With this, Delhi are all set to take on former champions Uttar Pradesh at the Wankhede Stadium on January 16.

Drivers unveiled for Force India Formula One team
10 Jnauary 2008

Italian Giancarlo Fisichella and Adrian Sutil of Germany were on Thursday unveiled as the drivers of the new Force India team that will race in Formula One this year.
Another Italian, Vitantonio Liuzzi, will serve as the test driver of the former Spyker team, now jointly owned by flamboyant Indian billionaire Vijay Mallya and the Mol family from the Netherlands.
Fisichella, who turns 35 on Monday and is a veteran of 196 Grand Prix races, was signed after he was eased out by Renualt at the end of the previous season to make way for Fernando Alonso who moved from McLaren.
Sutil, who finished 19th with Spyker last season, was retained as the number two driver after testing with Force India last month alongside, among others, Ralf Schumacher and Christian Klien.
The team will use two of the Ferrari-powered former Spyker F8-VII chassis in its new interim burgundy and white livery.

Ponting was not willing to listen - Kumble
11 January 2008

Anil Kumble says Ricky Ponting, the Australia captain, was "not willing to listen" when Kumble offered to defuse the Harbhajan Singh-Andrew Symonds situation with an apology. Kumble believes the incident could have been handled by the captains during the Sydney Test.
"I spoke to Ricky that day," he wrote in his column for the Hindustan Times, "and having heard from Harbhajan and Sachin before that, I was convinced that there had neither been any racist remark made, nor intended. I asked Harbhajan why he started it and he said he hadn't, Symonds did and goaded, he responded. But he insisted he made no racist comment.
"Ricky, meanwhile, was just not willing to listen, nor see my point. When I offered to apologise as Bhajji's skipper, it was only to smooth things over. At no stage did I admit that he had made a racist remark, in fact, I said he had not.
"Unfortunately, these days, when someone apologises, it is seen as either a sign of weakness or an admission of guilt. I am neither unnerved nor are we guilty. In the larger interests of the game, if an apology could help build bridges and smooth things over, then it is better made than left unsaid because of egos."
Kumble said the team had taken the matter seriously because they had a responsibility towards one of their colleagues. "In my book, it's really important that when somebody is accused of being a racist, whoever that someone is, the charge is not made lightly, followed up just to prove a point and is not deemed as proven unless there is absolute evidence. Unfortunately, this did not happen in Bhajji's case.
"Then again, he is a colleague and I have a responsibility towards him as his captain and as a fellow Indian. It is a serious allegation, calling someone a racist. You are not just accusing a cricketer, but the ramifications of this accusation, unproven in the eyes of mostly everyone, were bound to be huge. After all, India's cricketers are also the country's ambassadors and by making such serious charges, without proof, it becomes a question of honour."

Australia name unchanged squad for Perth Test match
Thursday, January 10, 2008
9 January 2008

Australia have named an unchanged squad for the third Test against India despite doubts over Matthew Hayden because of a hamstring injury. Hayden scored a century in Sydney despite hamstring problems. His fitness will be monitored before the Test begins in Perth on 16 January.
Brad Hogg was also named despite facing a ban for an alleged offensive remark, but he could miss out on the final XI if Australia go with four quicks.
Australia lead the series 2-0 but the second Test was marred with a charge of racism and India threatening to quit.

Meanwhile, India started a three-day tour match against an Australian Capital Territory XI in Canberra on Thursday.
The tourists declared on 325-9, with opener Wasim Jaffer hitting 92, before ACT XI reached 10-0 in reply at the close. Harbhajan was also playing but was out for a duck.
Chris Rogers was playing for ACT XI and the Western Australia opener could be called up to replace Hayden should he be ruled out, although New South Wales' Simon Katich is another option.

Sunil Gavaskar has accused the Australian cricket team of hypocrisy
7 January 2008

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has accused the Australian cricket team of hypocrisy after Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh was handed a three Test ban for allegedly making a racist jibe at Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds.
"Is it only when the Australians give it to somebody that what happens on the field, stays on the field?" Gavaskar fumed. "When they get it, has it got to be reported? It doesn't stay on the field."
Gavaskar, who has been commentating on Star Cricket and writing columns, was incensed at various decisions and made no effort to hide his anger at the poor umpiring.
Symonds claimed that the Indian off-spinner Harbhajan had called him a 'monkey' during play and captain Ricky Ponting brought the issue to the notice of the on-field umpires Steve Bucknor and Mark Benson.
Mike Proctor went on record saying the umpires didn't hear anything but still handed out the ban to Harbhajan, on the basis of the statements of two Australian players, Michael Clarke and Matthew Hayden.
The Australian media reported that Gavaskar asked: "This brings it to a very interesting situation. If the umpires haven't heard it, what has happened to the famous Australian way of saying what happens on the field, stays on the field?
"That is normally the situation. When there is something that happens on the field and has got nothing to do with racism - might have been a bit of a chirp - the Australians say: 'What has happened on the field, stays on the field - let's have a beer at the end of the day's play'.
"In this instance, if the umpires haven't heard anything, why isn't this particular line being used for this particular incident?" he added.
Cricket Australia Director and former captain Mark Taylor, one of the game's great diplomats, agreed with Gavaskar. He joined Gavaskar in saying Australia's behaviour would now be scrutinised more than ever.
"I think it's a very valid point. I think Ricky is opening up a Pandora's box in terms of this," he said.
"I mentioned a moment ago that the Australians play tough cricket. They make the odd chirp, so if this goes any further I am sure there will be times Ricky Ponting will be on the other side of the ledger."

Symonds broke 'pact', which led to incident - Chetan Chauhan
January 9 2008

The Indian team manager Chetan Chauhan has said that Andrew Symonds broke a "pact" when he instigated the confrontation with Harbhajan Singh during the Sydney Test, the incident that led to Harbhjan being charged and later found guilty of racist abuse for calling Symonds a monkey.
Chauhan did not reveal the details of this pact, which, he said, had been made after the ODI in India in October 2007 during which Harbhajan allegedly called Symonds a monkey. It has been learnt that Symonds met Harbhajan after the seventh one-day international in Mumbai and they agreed that they wouldn't abuse each other henceforth.
"In Mumbai they had a friendly pact, an oral pact," Chauhan told Harsha Bhogle on the Star Cricket channel during the first day of India's tour match in Canberra. "I would say the first person to have broken that pact was the person who has complained. He has said it everywhere that it was he who started it. The cause started from there and then the effect came in."
Chauhan's comments were in response to Bhogle saying that the Australians had maintained that the only incident not in the spirit of the game in Sydney was the Harbhajan issue.
Symonds had said that it was Harbhajan's action, when he decided to "hit Brett on the backside", that sparked off the confrontation.
"I have no idea why he did it," Symonds said. "I was standing nearby and when I saw what happened, I thought, 'Hold on, that's not on'. I'm a firm believer in sticking up for your team-mate so I stepped in and had a bit of a crack at Harbhajan, telling him exactly what I thought of his antics. He then had a shot back, which brings us to the situation we're facing."
A complaint was lodged against Harbhajan under section 3.3 of the ICC Code of Conduct and the match referee Mike Procter banned him for three Tests at a hearing after the conclusion of the Sydney Test. India has since appealed against the judgment.
