20 January 2008
The Indian squad for the Commonwealth Bank Series to be held in Australia next month invloving India, Australia and Sri Lanka was announced today afternoon. The notable omission in the ODI squad was ex Indian captain Saurav Ganguly. The decision comes as a surprise because Ganguly has been the top scorer for India ever since he has made his comeback to the Indian side. Rahul Dravid is also not being considered for the ODI series.
Explaining the reasons behind ignoring Ganguly and Dravid, BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah said, "The emphasis was on fielding abilities and they wanted a young fielding side for the series. That's why you see a lot of youngsters in the side."
Good performance by UP in the Ranji trophy has helped its players Suresh Raina, Praveen Kumar and Piyush Chawla to make comeback into the Indian ODI side. Gautam Gambhir who has scored centuries in last two Ranji trophy matches alsi makes a comebak into the side after being sidelined for test series due to shoulder injury.
The bowling will be spearheaded by RP Singh, Sreesanth and Irfan Pathan. The rookie bowler Ishant Sharma has retained his place from Test team due to injury to Zaheer Khan and some good showing by him during the Perth Test match.
Manoj Tiwary, Yusuf Pathan and Munaf have been placed on standby and will join the squad in case of any injuries.
