The gentleman agreement between the Indian Captain Anil Kumble and Australian Captain Ricky Pointing was put to rest following the meeting between the two captains on Monday. The agreement led to a lot of bad blood between the sides before it has been scrapped. Both the captains had agreed before the start of series to go by the fielders word in case of unclear catches and collections. "That wasn't the way I wanted to play. But the feeling through the Indian team was that they would like it to go back and be in the hands of the umpires on the field." Ricky Ponting said. Kumble was initially reluctant to accept that the agreement wouldn't come into play but admitted it once he was told that Ponting had already revealed it to media before him. "yes, certain things are best left to the impires, third umpire and the match referee. As it is, the players and umpires are all under pressure out in the middle, there is no need to burden ourselves with more. I think things will be best handled with the match referee or the umpires deciding on them." said Kumble. |
