Making sense of bidding in Indian Premier League, IPL
Thursday, February 21, 2008
A new chapter was written in Indian and World cricket yesterday as millions of peoples mostly in India watched with anticipation the developments of bidding and arguing the mindboggling price set for some players and some ridiculously low price for some of the greats of the game.

Cricket has always attracted huge amount of money in India but yesterday even these levels were breached. This is the just the beginning of the IPL and only one can imagine the kind of money that will pour for cricketers post IPL.

The players yesterday turned from the good and great to commodities that were being bided by the franchises and for once the players would have not mind anyone putting a price tag on them. There were huge surprises installed in the bidding and the biggest one came when
Australian captain Ricky Ponting and hard hitting opening batsmen Matthew Hayden went for 400,000 USD and 375,000 USD respectively compared to whopping 1.35 Million USD for Australian all rounder Andrew Symonds. Just only few days back Andrew Symonds was involved in controversy with Indian spin bowler Harbhajan Singh and just when it seemed that every Australians cricketers brand value got lower in India after that came the announcement of this bid by Hyderabad team. Even Andrew Symonds bugbear, Harbhajan Singh went home with hefty 850,000 USD nearly twice the amount for his spin partner and Test captain Anil Kumble.

Just as the news came pouring in about the bidding rounds the purist of the game went ballistic. How could MS Dhoni get more than Adam Gilchrist and Mark Boucher combined? How could Yusuf Pathan command 25,000 USD more than Shane Warne? How could David Hussey and Cameroon White get more money than Ricky Ponting and Michael Hussey? Several questions were raised but franchises had done their planning based on T20 skills, the age factor, the availability and most importantly marketability of the players.

If we have a close look at the bidding process then we will find that all rounder’s commanded most interest from all the franchises and they were amongst the highest paid cricketers. The non availability of Australian and Pakistani players impacted their bidding prices enormously. Controversy seemed to have played well to two cricketers for sure. Andrew Symonds and Harbhajan Singh emerged as front runners in there category of players. And lastly brand value played huge rule in determining MS Dhoni as undisputed leader of the pack and in Football sense he can be termed as David Beckham of cricket.

What remains to be seen is that will IPL invite the same passion as the India-Pakistan or Australia-England game arises in fans. Changing the loyalty from ones country to city will take long time but as it is said that every success has small beginning.

India clinch thriller as Yuvraj finds form in CB Series
19 February 2008

Yuvraj Singh chose the perfect day to get back into the batting groove with a beautifully compiled 76 runs and in return helped India stage a remarkable chase in a thrilling contest between India and Sri Lanka.

Batting first Sri Lanka were rocked early by the fall of two wickets. Then Sangakkara and Jayawardena had solid partnership and bailed Sri Lanka out of trouble and set India target of 239 runs. Chasing this total India were also setback by fall of three wickets before Yuvraj Singh decided to take control of the game by blazing through 76 runs and in process compiling two 50 plus runs partnerships with Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni.

When Yuvraj was out for 76 India still had 81 runs to win match. Irfan Pathan was batting at number 7 in this match and showed his worth at that spot by getting involved in good partnership with the captain MS Dhoni. When he got out it gave some spice to the match with India loosing wickets at small intervals and were left with 3 runs to win in last over. First ball of the final over was wide ball and then MS Dhoni hit next ball for two runs to complete his half century and give India second win of the series.

With this win India is on 12 points and need to win one of the next two matches to guarantee the spot in finals. Australia with 17 points is favourites to be in final unless they lose all of their matches.

Tom Moody named coach for Mohali team in IPL
Monday, February 18, 2008
17 February 2008

Tom Moody of Australia has been named the coach of Mohali team in the IPL tournament. Priety Zinta accompanied by her beau Ness Wadia said in the press conference held at PCA stadium in Mohali that they have secured the services of Tom Moody in capacity as a coach for their team.

Tom Moody, 42, a member of two World Cup-winning Australian teams, coached Sri Lanka for two years before leaving in May, 2007 to take up the reins for Western Australia.

Also it was revealed that Yuvraj Singh will be captain of the side. When asked about Yuvraj Singh not being in brightest form Priety Zinta replied that she was confident that the form slump will end soon and he is still the same player who hit six sixes in one over in T20 World Cup. Other concern now for the team will be to find three other players from catchment area as Yuvraj is already in and they need three players to fill the four player from catchment area clause in IPL.

India vs Australia at MCG Preview
Saturday, February 9, 2008
India will be taking on Australia at MCG tomorrow and they will be hoping that there young batting line up comes good against the Lee inspired Australian pace attack which on Friday destroyed any chances of Sri Lanka even thinking about the win with a thumping 128 runs victory.

The pitch at MCG will be the same that was used for the game between Queensland and Victoria. Therefore the pitch will be slow and not offer much pace for the bowlers. This will be good news for Indian team and they will be banking on the top 3 batsmen to make most of the runs.

Sehwag, Tendulkar and Gambhir have all looked good in both matches but the middle order is giving Indian team all headaches. Yuvraj Singh is yet to find his feet in Australia and other batsmen Rohit Sharma, Robin Uthappa and Manoj Tiwari have looked anything but certain against the bowling.

Another worry for India is the fitness of speedster Sreesanth who is running fever. His progress will be monitored and if he is unfit to play then Piyush Chwla could make his Australian debut with pitch being on low side.

India suffer humilating defeat in 20-20 match downunder
Friday, February 1, 2008
1 February 2008

India went into todays T20 match as favourites having won the T20 World Championship and beaten Australia in the previous two encounters between the sides. But this Indian outfit had unfamiliar look to it with no Yuvraj Singh and Joginder Sharma. Yuvraj Singh has been sidelined till Indias first ODI game and Joginder Sharma has not been selected to be part
of ODI team.

Having lost the start batsmen the Indian side opted to bat first the ploy they have been using in almost all of their T20 matches. But soon India found themselves in trouble with wickets being lost at regular intervals.

Virender Sehwag was the first man to be dismissed by a brilliant fielding exhibition by Australian captain Michael Clarke. In next over India lost its highest T20 scores Gautam Gambhir also. There was no Yuvraj Singh to steady the ship this time and with Sachin Tendulkar also not playing the game the Australians quickly grasped the match by dismissing all batsmen in quick succession.

Only Irfan Pathan offered some resistance and was responsible for India getting pass the lowest T20 total of 73 set by Kenya against New Zealand in South Africa in 2007. With a score of 74 India were never in hunt and openors Adam Gilchrist and Michael Clarke ensured they reached within striking distance before Adam Gilchrist got out. Brad Hodge then batted sensibly with Clarke to guide the home side to victory in 11th over and give India an embarrassing defeat in the format which they are World Champions.
