19 February 2008
Yuvraj Singh chose the perfect day to get back into the batting groove with a beautifully compiled 76 runs and in return helped India stage a remarkable chase in a thrilling contest between India and Sri Lanka.
Batting first Sri Lanka were rocked early by the fall of two wickets. Then Sangakkara and Jayawardena had solid partnership and bailed Sri Lanka out of trouble and set India target of 239 runs. Chasing this total India were also setback by fall of three wickets before Yuvraj Singh decided to take control of the game by blazing through 76 runs and in process compiling two 50 plus runs partnerships with Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni.
When Yuvraj was out for 76 India still had 81 runs to win match. Irfan Pathan was batting at number 7 in this match and showed his worth at that spot by getting involved in good partnership with the captain MS Dhoni. When he got out it gave some spice to the match with India loosing wickets at small intervals and were left with 3 runs to win in last over. First ball of the final over was wide ball and then MS Dhoni hit next ball for two runs to complete his half century and give India second win of the series.
With this win India is on 12 points and need to win one of the next two matches to guarantee the spot in finals. Australia with 17 points is favourites to be in final unless they lose all of their matches. |
